Amidst growing concerns of the environment, supplies of Natural Round Logs are becoming limited, driving up costs and lowering value. Even plywood, the most common wood panel is no longer viable due to rising cost and decreased sustainability. Since the 1980s, OSB has been widely used in North America where in 2012 alone 16,000 million square feet has been produced. The popularity of OSB in North America and Europe has spurred interest of the Asian markets. Besides being eco-friendly, OSBs are engineered for strength, flexibility and durability. Benefits include structural performance, size variation and board consistency that are comparable to plywood. Furthermore, the cost of production for OSB is more competitive, making it both a more affordable and attractive building material. OSB is an ideal alternative wood panel choice to conventional plywood. Any wood waste will be repurposed, used as fuel or sold as a co-product. The binding agent used is a type of low-emitting resin which is environmentally safe. The resulting OSBs are thus fully recyclable for multiple occasions and uses.
